Review: KT Tape

I should start out by saying that I have seen people use KT Tape during races and on the shooting range and have always wondered what it did and how it worked. I have researched it numerous times but have never been confident enough to buy it. I was worried that I would buy it and not know how to use it properly so that would be money wasted.

That was until this weekend while at the Runner’s World Half and Festival in Bethlehem. As a side note, if you ever get the chance to take part in there race weekend, do so! It is one of the most positive, uplifting weekends, jam packed with useful information for everyone. During the Festival’s expo, I happened to walk by the KT Tape vendor and decided what a better time to start asking questions. I told the rep that I tend to have pain right above my medial malleolus (along the inside of my leg above my ankle) when I run. He then told me that he would tape one body part for free so I figured why not try it. I know it’s not good to try new things right before a race but what the heck- it could only help, right? I was a little worried – he was taping my leg at 11:00am on Friday and my race wasn’t until 9:30am Saturday morning, however; he assured me that the tape stays in place for approximately three days and would not come loose in the shower.

I left the expo feeling confident. He explained the tape to me and what it does and that you can go on their website to find information on how to use the tape. He had me so convinced that I bought a roll! I slept with it on and showered the following morning and was impressed that the tape was not becoming loose! Then came race time – the true test. I should also mention that Bethlehem is very hilly, so this race was full of challenging hills and that is usually when my leg flares up. The results where amazing!!!! I PR’d my 10k time – not having to walk or stop for a water break once! I didn’t feel any pain during the race and I wasn’t sore the day after either! I took the tape off that day, and it was less painful that removing a Band-Aid. I am now a true believer that KT Tape assists in relieving pain and will continue to use it on all my races!

Review: EOTW Hydration Belt

I bought this EOTW Hydration belt a few weeks ago knowing that my mileage was about to increase in my training. One of the main reasons I chose this hydration belt was the reflective strip on the front of the belt. It is late September so the days are getting shorter and I find myself running when it’s darker outside. I mainly run on side roads that tend to be windy so this was very important to me.

The second thing I liked about this belt was that it did not break the bank. You can pick up one of these hydration belts on EBay or Amazon for $12-30. The belt comes with many compartments for your phone, water, gels, and anything else you need to carry. The website states

” With just one waist belt, you can take all the necessities along with when running-cellphone, ID, keys, cash, energy gel or granola bar and even a marathon number plate!

Water-resistant design & Lightweight neoprene material, keeping all belonging dry from light rain or sweat.(phone pocket size 7.5”X3.8”, fit almost all the smartphones)

High quality & special designed buckle-Avoid Finger Clipping by accident(most buckles have this problem)

Neoprene Pocket Design-Protect Cellphone Perfectly if Drop by Accident!

Strong flexible belt-keeping pocket in position when doing exercise. (Fit hip size range–Large: 37”-68” You could also choose EOTW Small Version:27-55”)

Improved water bottle holder-hold the daily-used bottle up to 500ML, and don’t need to worry if the bottle offered by seller is environmental or not.”

I took it on my 6 1/2 mile run this morning and it is so lightweight, I didn’t even notice I was wearing it. it is also very comfortable and stays in place as it adjusts to your waist size easily. I would definitely recommend this hydration running belt to any of my friends!

Check out their website at http://www.eotwsports.com/product/204/

Review – Saucony Running Shoes

As a beginner runner, I thought going to a chain sports store was were every runner went to get their gear, so when I decided to start running prior to my ACL surgery, I headed out to the local sports store and bought a paid of shoes that I thought would make running one of the easiest things I have done. Wow, was I wrong.

I began running in the shoes that I thought were running shoes and had a lot of pain in my calves. I started to do some research and found that adding mileage and hills can cause calf pain but so can improper shoes.

In June I won a contest on our local news station, channel 69 WFMZ, training with Bart Yasso! Bi-weekly we would gather as a group at a different location and discuss different running topics. One shoot was held at Emmaus Run Inn in Emmaus Pa. While speaking with the owner Chris, I learned that there is a science to being properly fitted for running shoes. He took a look at my pronation, arch and stride. He measured both my feet and let me try three different brands. He then allowed me to run in all three, testing which I liked best.

Saucony was the shoe for me! They are comfortable and offer a lot of support. While running in them, I feel like I am running on air. And guess what, the calf pain is gone!!!!!

Runner’s World Half & Festival

One of the biggest race weekends is upon us! Runner’s have trained and put in the miles, now its time to prove they have what is takes to get to the finish line. This is not just an event – but a FESTIVAL! and what a beautiful location; the Steel Mill and ArtsQuest Steel Stacks campus in Bethlehem.

The festival weekend will include:

  • Half marathon (Sunday)

And if that’s not enough for you, you can participate is one of there multiple-race options:

  • The Five & Dime – 5K and 10K

  • The Hat Trick – 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon

  • The Grand Slam 26.2 Weekend Marathon – 3.8 Trail Run, 5K, 10K, and Half Marathon – however this is now sold out.

I had the amazing opportunity to train with race designer and Chief Running Officer of Runner’s World Bart Yasso along with 4 other lucky runners. As we have trained, one thing that he has told us numerous times is that one of the most important things is to get to the start line. If you can get there, you will get to the finish. He has warned us that Bethlehem is hilly and there are hills on the course; however, its not impossible. When there’s a will, there’s a way!

Review – 7 Minute Workout for IPhone

I love getting running magazines in the mail – I love reading the articles, seeing what  is new in gear and exercise tips, as well as reading inspirational real life stories! Saturday I received the October 2016 issue of Women’s Running and I was so pumped to take a look inside. On pages 28 and 29, there is a section called “Download Now”, detailing new apps specific to runners.

The apps detailed are the Virtual Runner, Strava Premium, Zeel, Scientific 7-minute Workout, and Komoot.

The one that drew me in was the Scientific 7-minute Workout App that they advertised as FREE! I tend to be a busy person, like most women, and am always looking for a quick workout that I can do anywhere; specifically home and work. More importantly, the workout needs to increase my heart rate and get me sweating. To me, it’s not always the length of the workout, more importantly, the quality of the workout. When I looked it up in the App Store, I noticed that it is actually $.99 – which still isn’t bad. I decided to look at other free 7-minute workouts and I stumbled upon Wahoo 7.

I just tried it out tonight and wow did it get my heart rate up and had me sweating! The exercises  in the first 7-minute workout included jumping jacks, wall sits, push-ups, ab crunches, step-ups onto a chair, squats, triceps dips on a chair, planks, high knees running in place, lunges, push-ups and rotations, and side planks. There are a few other things I really like about this app – it works the entire body, which is very important to a runner, and there are different 7-minute workouts so that it does not become routine. You also have the option to “Make You Own 7-Minute Workout” for just $.99. I will definitely be adding this into my daily routine!

About Me

My name is Tiffany and in 2014, at the age of 30, I decided to give running a try. my brother was running on a normal basis and seemed to enjoy the training and running, so I figured, “let’s give it a try”.  I started running short distances and in October 2014, I ran my first 5k at the Women’s 5k Classis in Allentown at the Lehigh Parkway. The excitement of the day and the runner’s high I got running through the finish line had me convinced that this was a sport that I wanted to continue to pursue!

On April 23, 2015, I went to work just like any normal day. The only difference, we had a Defensive Tactics training scheduled for that day. The day started out normal – a couple forward rolls, some rearward break falls – then came corner fighting. We set up and it was my job to fight my way out of a corner as three men in Redman gear tried to attack. I saw an opening, pivoted, and fell to the ground quickly. I was able to get up and walk around because I was in little to no pain, however; the next training exercise ended the same way, on the ground. I went to the hospital were they ran some tests and advised me that my ACL was torn and that I would need surgery to repair it. Not only was I upset because I had to have surgery, all I kept thinking was that my sort running “career” was over.

On May 21, 2015 I underwent ACL Reconstruction surgery using a cadaver replacement tendon. Surgery went well, Physical Therapy started immediately twice a week, and I was back to work by June 18, 2015. I mean, I couldn’t stay home and watch Cupcake Wars forever. Plus, I was ready to get back to normal. I continued PT until September 25, 2015 when my surgeon cleared me to go back to full duty at work and told me that I could go back to running! He told me to take it slow and wear my brace and I was okay with that. I started running slow, short distances and then one day in April 2016, I was watching the morning news and they had an advertisement for a running contest – WFMZ 69 news would pay for your entry into the Runner’s World Half & Festival as well as train with the Bart Yasso, Chief Running Officer of Runner’s World. In May 2016, while out on a short distance run, I received a call from WFMZ stating I won a spot in the Runner’s World Half & Festival running the 10k. I was so excited because I had never run that distance before and this is exactly what I needed to get motivated back into running.
